Introductions

Who are you and what do you expect from this class?  Please write 4-5 sentences about yourself, including academic, career, and personal goals relevant to our course in biomedical ethics (why you are in school, what you like to study, where you work/volunteer/spend your time, other relevant experience, something interesting about you, etc.)

Then please ask questions and/or comment on the posts of at least two of your classmates.  Let's get to know each other.

  1. Hi, my name is Craig Schutzman, but I am guessing that you all already know this! I am currently in my Spring semester of my junior year here at Thomas More studying Biology with a concentration in Cellular and Molecular Biology. I am working towards my eventual goal of becoming an emergency physician with training in traumatology. As of now, I work as a science tutor for the college as well as a senior lab technician in the college's Biology Department. I enjoy things like reading, going out with friends, and long walks on the beach!

But on a more serious note, there are a couple things that I would like to get out of this class. First, I would like to learn how to think about and "digest" biomedical ethics in a more philosophical way. I would like to gain a better perspective on this topic and the issues it involves. I would also like to learn how to actually discuss these topics in such a way that I can display comprehension and understanding. I would love to be able to apply what I learn in this course to medical school interviews and application papers.

  2. Hello All! I am Cody Stephens. I'm a Junior pre-med bio major here at TMC. I am preparing to apply to medical school this spring with the hope of pursuing a specialty in neurosurgery some day. Obviously, this class is very relevant to my career goals. Yes, I do "have" to take a philosophy course, but that is certainly not the only reason I am in this class. There were other options for a philosophy credit. In fact, it did not look like I was going to be able to be in this class until late last semester. Instead, I really wanted to be in this class and picked it because I feel like this class can really help me in my career as the face of modern medicine and the ethical questions it raises continually develop and change. I strive to be open-minded and hear others out, no matter the ethical dilemma in question. I mean, if we never listen to another opinion, we never learn anything besides what we already know. How terrible would that be?! That said, I look forward to getting to know everybody and having a successful class this semester!

  3. Hey everybody! My name is Zach Rieder, and I am also a Junior Biology Major with interests in medicine and pharmaceutical sciences, as well as a Minor in Chemistry. I just switched to the Pre-Pharmacy track, and plan to take the PCAT later this semester. I work part time at Union Kroger Pharmacy as a technician, so come get your flu shot today! I like exercising, playing video games, listening to music, eating food, and I plan to travel the world some day! I must say, out of all the philosophy course to take, this was probably my top choice and I'm happy it was offered online this semester. Seeing as I'm going to be dealing with drugs for the rest of my life, I will find it interesting to see how ethics and medical controversies play together. As Craig said, I think this course will be beneficial in terms of further interviews with medical schools or pharmacy schools. Philosophy has always been of my interests, I find it fun to critically think in the form of discussions. I hope this goes great, and I can't wait to view other peoples' opinions and perspectives over these topics.

    1. I too am happy that this course was offered online in order for us to be able to actually take it. I feel that it will be very beneficial for each one of us as we continue on with our given academic paths. I am very excited to see what these next eight weeks have in store for us!

  4. Hi guys!! My name is Victoria Smith, and I am also a Junior Biology Major. I haven't decided what job I will pursue after college, but I do know it will be in the medical field. I love to read, listen to music, go to concerts, spend time with family and friends, and babysit my cousins. I work part time as a technician at the Fort Mitchell Kroger Pharmacy, which is much better than Union Kroger, just saying. I'm taking this class to learn about the constantly evolving ethics and controversies in the medical field. I think this class will be interesting because it offers the opinions and perspectives of others on current topics. I also like that the topics are current and show us a glimpse of the medical world as it evolves. I'm hoping this class will help prepare us for the topics that will occur when we have entered the medical field and how to handle them and discuss them in ways that are comprehensible. Overall I am excited to hear others opinions and perspectives on current topics to see how others think and feel about the problems of today's world of medicine.

    1. Union Kroger Pharmacy is without a doubt the better pharmacy. I mean, just from a philosophical standpoint we can see experience and knowledge in their store. Have you considered transferring?

  5. Hello everyone, I am Crosby Fugate, and I am yet another Junior Biology major with a minor in Chemistry. My career goal is to attend medical school and train as a pediatric transplant hepatologist. A liver transplant recipient myself, I occasionally mentor patients with end-stage liver disease as they await the process of liver tranplantation. My interests include reading anything I can get my hands on, tea, old music, and stimulating conversations.

I am excited to be taking this class because of its obvious relevance to my career choice and the complex ethical dilemmas so often found in the study of medical science. I look forward to participating in discussions in what I believe will be a friendly and relaxed environment.

  6. Hi guys! My name is Rebecca Kuhn, and like you all, I am also a Junior Biology major here at TMC. I currently work at the lovely Panera Bread (hopefully not for too much longer), and I am also a volleyball coach for athletically challenged 14 year old girls. Unfortunately I do not know my exact career and/or academic plans after I graduate, but I do know that I want to work somewhere in the medical field.

I am excited for this class because this class will address the many questions and concerns that are brought up in the everyday life of the hospital personnel. I'm excited to hear all of the different opinions and perspectives about what should be done in certain situations, as well as the best way to look at these situations, and also and the best way to arrive at solutions to these situations.

I think this is a great course to have online, and I'm excited to be in it with you guys because I know you won't judge me if I say anything stupid... or at least you better not! :)

    1. Wow, Becca! Nice to meet you. I can call you Becca, right? I am glad to hear that you have an interest in the medical field. What types of jobs could you see yourself doing, and what are some specific interests?

  7. Hey everyone!

I'm Samantha Smith, I'm a senior Biology major! I currently work as a manager at Champs Sports in the Florence Mall, and have been in the "shoe game" for nearly six years.... I guess you could say I'm obsessed. My major hobby is crossfit, and this past weekend I competed in my first competition (for the record, I placed in the top 15 out of 79 women!)

While I have been on the Biology/Pre-Med track for the last 3.5 years, I have recently decided to steer more towards nursing, in hopes of becoming a Critical Care Nurse in the Army. I will graduate with my Bachelor's Degree in Biology, but plan to attend a degree-completion program to obtain a Bachelor's in Nursing as well.

I am very excited to learn about the material we will cover in this class, as I hope it answers many ethical questions we will be faced with in our careers. I love to voice my opinion, but I also like to see others' perspectives on things as well. I know we will have great discussion in this class as we uncover many important topics!
